The Perfect Weekend Getaway in Smithville, Texas

Last weekend, my partner John and I went on the most amazing weekend getaway, with the intention to slow down, reconnect with each other and our surroundings, and enjoy some of this beautiful Texas spring weather before the summer heat hits (Texans, you get it)! The best part?? We were only a short hour away from Austin! It was such a lovely and simple experience from start to finish, and I can't wait to share the details with ya'll. I pray that it'll inspire you to get out and explore different parts of our beautiful state of Texas!

John & I definitely enjoy exploring things off the beaten path together. We love tiny Texas towns, checking out a little local bar with pool or karaoke, delicious simple food, stopping into cute locally owned shops, and meeting locals along the way. I think the most important thing we love to do in a new area, is leave a warm and positive impression on the people we meet (that's definitely something I admire about John. He loves to make others smile). Okay, okay, lets get to the fun stuff!!

Where to Stay near Smithville, Texas:

I stumbled upon the Tiny Farmhouse @ Juniper Hill Farm on Air BnB and instantly fell in love with the property! We booked two nights in Sarah's adorable Tiny Farmhouse on her 5 acre family farm. The Tiny House is in Smithville, Texas (If you've seen the movie Hope Floats with Sandra Bullock, Smithville is where it was shot!) which is about 20 minutes from Bastrop, Texas, where there are a lot of great tourist attractions in the area! Fortunately, I grew up on the weekends in the same area on my family's ranch, so going back felt like coming home, and it was SO lovely to share the area with John.

The Tiny Farmhouse @ Juniper Hill Farm was absolutely magical! As we drove through the gate, we were welcomed by Baby Goats, roaming Chickens, and a beautiful Vegetable Garden situated alongside the driveway leading up to the Tiny Farmhouse. The Tiny Farmhouse is perfect for guests who are wanting to enjoy the outdoors, get cozy, and aren't afraid to try new experiences. Our space was absolutely adorable, totally functional, and our host Sarah had added so many special details that made our experience absolutely lovely! Coffee & tea are included, along with Farm Fresh Eggs from her Chickens, she had cards, and checkers, and a great selection of DVDs for us to enjoy in our cozy upstairs loft bedroom! My favorite part of the Farmhouse was the ladder to get up to the bedroom! It felt like we were sleeping in a treehouse, which was so much fun! The Tiny Farmhouse uses a composting toilet which at first felt intimidating, but once we got used to it, we felt right at home! The space is fit for able-bodied solo travelers or pairs of two! If you can't climb up a ladder, you'll have a hard time getting into the bed.

Sarah and her family live in a sustainable house of their own on the property. They situated the Tiny Farmhouse so perfectly to where John & I still felt secluded and had tons of privacy during our stay! We had a private outdoor porch with comfy outdoor furniture to lounge on under the twinkle lights at night, and a secluded fire pit and bench area to really soak in the outdoors!

Sarah was such a warm and welcoming host, she offered to give us a farm tour on Saturday afternoon, and I was thrilled! Starting my own little farm on my family's ranch is a huge aspiration of mine, so getting to pick Sarah's brain was such a treat! Sarah welcomed us into her Goat Barn, as she was milking the Mamas, which was such a cool experience. We got to pet all the Baby Goats, she gave us a great tour of her 'Chicken Ranch,' we walked to her family's Vegetable Garden, and talked about how to take steps to live a more sustainable lifestyle, like using grey water for her garden!

Overall, our stay at the Tiny Farmhouse @ Juniper Hill Farm was one for the books, and we can't wait to book again SOON!

Things to do in the area:

There's SO much to do in the area, but since we were only staying for the weekend, John & I decided we really just wanted to stay local, relax, and have a simple, stress free time together. At times, it can be so easy to have the hustle and bustle of life carry over into vacation plans, i.e: itineraries, to-do lists, places to be at specific times. So instead, we chose to let God take the reins and trusted His plan for our weekend!

Here's what we did:

  • Dinner & Free Pool @ Rosanky Icehouse: (Only 7 minutes from Tiny Farmhouse @ Juniper Hill Farm)

Address: 2989 TX-304, Rosanky, TX 78953

Stop in to enjoy a Cold Beer, play some free Pool, and enjoy a cheap down home style dinner. John ordered the Bacon Cheeseburger and Fries, and I got the Chicken Fried Steak Weekend Special. The food was GREAT, and the portions were huge!

  • Rented a Kayak for the day from Bastrop River Company: (20 minutes away from Tiny Farmhouse @ Juniper Hill Farm)

Address: 1200 Willow St, Bastrop, TX 78602 (Located inside Fisherman’s Park)

Rent a Kayak, Canoe, or Paddle board and hit the Camino Real Paddling Trail on the "Texas" Colorado River for the afternoon! This short River trail is a lovely 2-3 hour trip, and so worth every moment! The owner Lee is super friendly, and knowledgeable about the River conditions. Your rental comes with your watercraft, life jacket, paddles, shuttle service, and DRY BOX!! The dry box came in super handy! After a short safety lesson, we were on the water, soaking in the sunshine in no time! At the end of your trip, they load up your kayaks and shuttle you back to your car. Truly such amazing service, we didn't know what to do with ourselves!

We saw so many beautiful wild flowers along the river!! The Weeping Willows were John's favorite! The trip is full of so much beauty, it was so nice to get out and be amongst Mother Nature!

Getting to reflect and share all the adventures we had last week has been so much ya'll! This trip really reminded me that God is truly so good, and when you finally surrender to His plans for you, He has a whole world of beauty awaiting you!

I hope this post give you guys some inspiration to finally take that special little trip you've been putting off, and remind yourself that you deserve it! Whether you're taking a friend, a partner, or riding solo, we ALL deserve to take a moment to just enjoy life, and this trip was such a special and easy way to do that.

Let's get back to the good things in life, shall we?!
